WE MAKE THINGS.

Local Language is an Oakland-based creative studio that curates, conceives, designs and creates unique custom artworks, large scale installations, and design products.  We are visual artists, art consultants, designers, and extraordinary makers - and the art collections we create tell the story of each community and location. Our staff works with a network of independent artists in the Bay Area and beyond, placing local artists’ work in every project.

Inside our studio art fabricators utilize high-tech digital tools and artisan craft techniques to print, paint, build, and create art. We create art collections for corporate, hospitality, healthcare, and residential environments around the world. Made in Oakland.

LOVE MAPS: Lise Silva Gomes

Lise Silva Gomes is an artist and author based in Oakland, California. Through fiber art, painting, writing and visualization, her work honors dreaming as the language of intuition. With a background in sociology, she considers visual archetypes in our culture to be a compelling study of the collective consciousness and societal messaging.

Evoking mysterious symbols and familiar objects suspended in expansive landscapes of color, Silva Gomes explores the space where we process memories and desires. She creates surreal scenes of dream logic that unlock childhood memories with nostalgic symbols of pop culture, color studies, and femme aesthetics.

During her residency at Local Language Silva Gomes’ work delved into the theory that childhood experiences cast a map within the mind to finding love. Drawing upon the nostalgic and incorporating techniques honed during her residency, Love Maps utilizes dimension and texture to a surreal effect. It inspires an intentional and playful envisioning of love; an introspective check-in that unlocks childhood memories; an invitation to love that whispers, “What you seek is seeking you.”
